身為工匠之子
又長於精工之國瑞士
因此對材料與手工有天生的感應
對於細部也相當的堅持
到過美國留學 (了解多元文化幾乎是所有名師的共同特色)
除了建築設計
亦從事教學
對於運動、音樂亦保持興趣
在公私部門磨練些許之後
於36歲成立自己的事務所
在執業初期
因為對於建築的堅持及事必躬親
其作品的數量不多
且多在瑞士境內
也因如此
很晚才被世人所了解
但是Zumthor依舊不改其志
並沒有被名利沖昏頭
更不願意自己與作品落入<畢爾包效應>
